The Evolution of Reformer Pilates: From Classical Roots to Dynamic Innovation at ReDefined Wellbeing Hubs

Reformer Pilates has undergone a remarkable evolution since its inception nearly a century ago. What began as a rehabilitation method for wounded soldiers has transformed into one of the most dynamic and holistic fitness practices available today. At ReDefined Wellbeing Hubs, we honour the legacy of Reformer Pilates by fusing the classical principles pioneered by Joseph Pilates with the energy and innovation of modern dynamic movement. The result is a unique blend delivered through our signature classes: Reformer Lite, Reformer Move, Reformer Burn, and Reformer Hype—each crafted to support our members' journey toward total wellbeing.

The Classical Roots: Joseph Pilates' Vision

Joseph Pilates developed his namesake method in the early 20th century, originally calling it “Contrology.” His philosophy centred on the idea that mental and physical health are interrelated. During World War I, he used makeshift resistance equipment, springs attached to hospital beds, to help rehabilitate injured soldiers. These prototypes later evolved into what we now know as the Reformer.

Classical Reformer Pilates is built on six foundational principles: concentration, control, centering, flow, precision, and breathing. It emphasises small, controlled movements performed with perfect form, aiming to build a strong core, improve posture, and cultivate a deep mind-body connection. It’s mindful, intentional, and transformative.

From Classical to Contemporary

As Pilates gained popularity, especially in the 1990s and early 2000s, contemporary practitioners began to experiment. They maintained the foundational principles but adapted them for modern lifestyles, body types, and fitness goals. Contemporary Reformer Pilates incorporated props like resistance bands, rings, and weights, as well as exercises informed by physical therapy, functional movement, and sport science.

This approach appealed to a wider audience and proved beneficial not just for injury rehabilitation but also for general fitness, mobility, and even athletic performance. It was more inclusive, accessible, and adaptable, yet still grounded in the essence of Joseph Pilates’ original method.

The Rise of Dynamic Reformer Pilates

As fitness trends evolved, so did Reformer Pilates. Enter Dynamic Reformer Pilates, a more energetic, sweat-inducing take on the classic format. This style introduces a faster pace, higher intensity, and often cardio-inspired sequences that integrate strength training, balance, and flexibility.

Dynamic Reformer Pilates is powerful and invigorating. It appeals to those who want a full-body workout that strengthens, tones, and challenges endurance while still honouring alignment and control. It combines the mindfulness of Pilates with the intensity of functional training, bridging the gap between form and fitness.

Each of our signature classes brings a distinct energy and purpose:

Reformer Lite

Designed as an introduction to the reformer, Reformer Lite blends classical Pilates principles with gentle, low-impact movement. It’s perfect for beginners, older adults, those returning from injury, or anyone seeking restorative flow. You’ll learn foundational techniques, build core strength, and connect breath to movement—all in a calming, supportive environment.

Reformer Move

This is where tradition meets transformation. Reformer Move honours the roots of Pilates with an elevated contemporary twist. Think fluid transitions, layered movement patterns, and balanced full-body training. It’s ideal for those wanting to deepen their practice and enhance mobility, posture, and coordination.

Reformer Burn

If you’re ready to take it up a notch, Reformer Burn brings the heat. This class infuses dynamic Pilates with endurance-based intervals and strength training. Expect to sweat. The intensity is higher, the tempo faster, and the challenge greater—but it’s all grounded in precision and technique. Reformer Burn sculpts, tones, and builds a resilient body from the inside out.

Reformer Hype

Reformer Hype is where movement meets music and energy meets expression. It’s our most dynamic and innovative class, high-octane, rhythm-driven, and absolutely electric. This isn’t just a workout; it’s a celebration of movement. You'll feel empowered, alive, and ready to take on the world.
