Festive Season Habits

Whilst it may be difficult to maintain healthy habits over the festive season, it’s important to recognise the value of regular exercise, sleep, drinking plenty of water and sustainable nutrition. This will help ensure you are reinvigorated, refreshed and ready to take on the new year. Let’s be honest 2022 has been one of the more challenging years in recent memory, and that comes off the back of 2020 and 2021 …


A favourite quote of mine:

"To insure good health: eat lightly, breathe deeply, live moderately, cultivate cheerfulness, and maintain an interest in life. There are lots of people in this world who spend so much time watching their health that they haven't the time to enjoy it.”


Considering the chaos of this time of year, it’s likely that your routine will be shaken up a bit, and that’s completely normal! It’s important to prioritise time to enjoy yourself with the likely arrival of friends, family and plenty of food. The key message here is to get up and move where possible. We love talking about “Natural Movement” here at ReDefined. Exercise that forms part of your day without being a chore. Playing sport with the kids, some backyard cricket, walking the dog, walking up Pap Hills or Summerhill trails (my local favourite) , going for a swim or surf. Movement options are plentiful in the bay…


Take the time to indulge, enjoy some pavlova, chocolate, and homemade trifle. You deserve a break! Set your boundaries on energy-dense foods or alcohol to avoid overdoing it, but try not to feel guilty when you do get an opportunity to enjoy some of the finer things.


Your mental health is essential. For many, Christmas will be a celebration brimming with close friends and family, but the reality is that for many Kiwis, Christmas can be quite a lonely time. While exercise is a fantastic way to boost your mental well-being, sometimes conversations with the right people can be a big boost. It’s always okay to ask for help .


So rather than being unrealistic this silly season. Be realistic with your goal setting. Unwind, enjoy, take the moments to reflect on the year that’s been and the future that comes. And my final tip, don’t set news year’s resolutions around health and fitness!
